About Cortona in Tuscany
Cortona, an etruscan jewel of a hillside is to be found in Southern Tuscany. Its spectacular location on the southern spur of Monte Sant'Egidio gives it magnificent views over the Valdichiana and lake Trasimeno in neighbouring Umbria. Many historic sites and artefacts are in and around this lovely city and new discoveries have been made very recently. The natural beauty of Cortona's location is matched by its cultural heritage carried on in modern times. The Tuscan Sun festival takes place each summer attracting the finest artists and musicians. Throughout the year there are traditional "sagre", local exhibitions and of course the countries' old saturday morning market. Exquisite shops offering local craftware and excellent bars and restaurants line the via Nazionale.

 

The heart of medieval Cortona is the Piazza della Repubblica, dominated by the Palazzo Comunale. Many of the city's events take place here and it's a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Close by is the Piazza Signorelli housing the theatre of that name and the splendid Palazzo Casali, the latter originating in the 1.200's; many imposing coats of arms including that of Francesco dei Medici, one time governor of Cortona, bear witness for many illustrious Cortonese connections.

Today Cortona is a vibrant cosmopolitan centre attracting many different nationalities whilst retaining her unique charm and identity. Complementing Cortona and lying at the foot of the hill is Camucia: Here the rail and bus services link Cortona-Camucia to many important cities like Arezzo, Firenze, Roma, Perugia etc ... Modern facilities ie health care, sports, facilities, supermarkets and all modern-day requirements can be easily met. Deciding to live in another country can be both an exciting and challenging prospect.
